Sir Andrew Pellet Green: Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle’s Protégé

Charles A. Fremantle

Andrew Pellet Green was born on 8 September 1777 on his family estate near Bedford, the second son of eight children. He was educated at Butterworth’s Naval Academy, Chelsea, until he joined the Royal Navy aged sixteen on 14 April 1793, and went to sea with Captain Thomas Lenox Frederick, who commanded the third-rate HMS Illustrious (74). Frederick was a friend of his father, and had achieved fame serving in the West Indies in the American War of Independence. Frederick was later to take part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 when he commanded the second-rate HMS Blenheim (90), second in the line of battle with Nelson’s third-rate HMS Captain (70) thirteenth, but he died in 1799 leaving Green without an influential sponsor. Frederick had married Lucy Boscawen from Lord Falmouth’s naval family with connections to the Fremantles.
