CHAPTER 35

Let’s Go to the Mall

The natives of Iridia were all friendly enough with the party, despite the slaughter of so many Cultivators in broad daylight. Aetheria’s guilt ebbed slightly at how pleased so many of the locals were. It seemed that most of the mercenaries had not treated the natives of the city kindly during their stay. With the perceptive abilities of Void Gaze at her hands, she could discern that the smiles were honest, not a front to placate the murderous Asura who had come amongst them. It’s the small things in life, like not being looked at like a genocidal monster, that matter.

You have spent too much of your life under the delusions of mortality. Death is not the terminus of existence, it is no shroud to mark the cessation of existence. Your education has passed beyond the quaint notions of a final silence to the horrid symphony of life. Death is the transformative process by which your souls rejoin the sea of consciousness and dive back into the ocean of thought, forever part of the unfathomable whole.

“In time even the divine form of Ein Sof changes. It was once Ayin, but now it is Yesh. Nothing lasts forever.” Reverie disagreed with Fred. That they could somehow hear the other, but still could not address one another bothered her. Why would that be the case? Or does Reverie mean that Nothing, as in Ayin, lasts forever, and everything else is transitory?

Aetheria cast off the thoughts of existence, death, and attempts to rationalize her own actions. She had done what she had, and that was now in the past. Still, a small part of her wondered what had ever happened to her naive insistence she had been reincarnated as a heroine. Oh right, I found out I was a weapons project produced by Khaos, Nyx, Aetherius, and Chronos.

“That frown does not suit you at all, darling.” Kallos grasped Aetheria’s hand, and together they walked down the streets of Iridia. The colors seemed more vibrant, the scents more enjoyable, and warmth flooded her heart with their hands joined together. It wasn’t that without her touch the good things were gone, but love awoke something magical in reality, a quality that made the suffering of the physical realms more tolerable.

“Do the paths to gnosis through denial of love and passions stem from the idea that if you make it miserable enough, you’ll work extra hard to escape the cage?” Aetheria inquired of the Soul Witch.

“It’s one school of thought. The paths to gnosis are many, but some are more difficult than others. The physical worlds are a place of corruption and endless trials, but that does not mean there is not good in lower worlds, nor that there is an absence of corruption in the higher realms. Existence is ineffable, yet we crave to understand it, despite an intentional limitation built within us to do so.” Kallos shrugged.

“My, that smells good,” Kallos murmured of the scent of a vendor with meat skewers.
