Arch Hunter looked like the picture-perfect Southern California boy with his tanned skin, wiry muscles, and wavy blond hair. He extended his handshake, but he pulled me into a hug. I felt like a giant next to him, he barely stood five feet tall. “Sorry,” he said, breaking the embrace. “I loved your movies. I saw all three of them, even the last one.” Goofy grin on his face, he shook my hand again. “I can’t believe that we’re going to be roomies.”

I whispered, “You know that I’m gay, right?”

“Of course he doesn’t,” a familiar velvety voice said. “He spent the last year living under a rock.”

My own celebrity fanaticism caused my heart to stop when I saw one of the greatest femmes fatales of the Saturday morning serials walk up and give a trademark sinister, grin, complete with black lipstick. Zipporah Bloodgood played alien princesses and jungle queens better than anyone else. Even as a gay man, I was fascinated by the raw sexuality she portrayed with a single tilt of the head.

“I just don’t want to cause problems,” I said, speaking to Arch while keeping my eyes glued on the satin floor-length gown with rabbit collar that Zipporah wore, oblivious to the heat. “I mean, if he lets a gay guy stay with him they might think that he’s gay.” I felt nervous, like I was about to become the victim of a practical joke.

“Dietrich Albrecht,” he said, pointing to himself. “That’s my real name. My sister changed both of our names after we came to America. Freja joined the League of German Girls when she was fifteen, so she could play the part of the obedient Hitler youth. Our brother, Dierk, had been captured by the Nazis when they raided a gay bar. They took him away, and my parents told us that we would never see him again. They told us never to even talk about Dierk. Everyone condemns the Nazis for what they did to the Jews, but no one wants to talk about what happened to all the queers.” He shrugged, and gave me a crooked smile. “My sister didn’t smuggle us to the United States so that I could act like a Nazi.”

Zipporah raised a perfect eyebrow when she saw a man stumble his way onto the ship between sips on his flask. It took me a few moments to realize where I knew him from. Five years ago, he played a string of fresh-faced fighter pilots and eager Marines. Alcohol aged him far older than his actual thirty years and a gut that spilled out over his belt.

“Is that Yancy Cole?” I asked.

“The one and only Yancy Cole,” he drunkenly slurred. “Not as pretty and never as sober.” He let out a whistling laugh than glared at me. “If it isn’t the skivvies queer.” He let out a whistling laugh. “I used to want to get into your underwear so bad, and I don’t mean the ones that you were selling.” He fell over and choked.
