Interlude

In anger, he grabbed the delicate vase and threw it across the room. A scamper of feet came from above. She must have heard him. He gripped his fists in rage. He had been prepared for this. It was a dangerous game he was playing. And danger always involved a certain penchant for death. Still, he could not risk losing her. Only she could get him what he wanted, only she could carry the torc, and he must ensure she made that choice and lived to see it through.

He returned to his gazing bowl, looking at the water, which barely rippled in the still, dark room. Everything was coming along, she was feeling the effects. Surely there was no way she would say no. Surely, there was no way she could resist the destiny that had been determined for her so many years ago.

He stood to dump the bowl of water into a nearby sink. Then he pulled out a knife and began to cut. He had to check the portents, he could not risk the Gods changing their mind on him now.
