That’s the way it was at McKinsey & Co., where I worked in the 70s. We were always racing to keep up with the demands of the day; and, moreover, performance on the current project was the make-or-break issue. Yet it was also clearly understood (via “culture” and evaluation schemes) that to get ahead you helped others and developed a reputation for doing so, no matter how much pain was involved.

I naively assumed that a similar atmosphere existed in most companies. My mistake. It didn’t and doesn’t. I’ve learned that few professional service firms, never mind steel mills, have a knowledge-sharing culture. How to create such a culture, especially with layoffs growing and survivors’ workloads exploding, is one of the biggest conundrums that managements, bent on creating value from dispersed knowledge, face today.
