DIGITAL STORYTELLING VISUAL DESIGN TIPS
Digital content strategist Naveen Gowda spent a lot of time studying how people become top performers on YouTube, which is a long-form consumption-behavior platform that you can get people to tune in to for long periods of time. Gowda studied vloggers and individual brands on the platform and found that those who are successful share similar communication styles.
Effective communication design came down to factors such as the colors, pacing, and lighting in a video—a lot of seemingly smaller details had a huge impact on a video’s success. For example, Gowda discovered that a disproportionately high ratio of the top performers, who were averaging four or five million views on a single video, were overenunciating their words. YouTubers who didn’t overenunciate weren’t receiving high numbers of views, regardless of the similarities in the messaging of their content. After studying all the details that made videos successful, Gowda has developed a deep understanding of communication design. These days, he can take video concepts that aren’t necessarily strong and get them to receive hundreds of millions of views.
Remember, it’s important to consider the visual and auditory aspects of your stories, because concepts presented with visuals are learned more easily and are more frequently recalled. Using this fact to your advantage keeps people interested in watching your content. And don’t forget to study your competitors for shortcuts to making the right visual choices. If you take the time to see how they’re handling the communication design of their videos, you could save hours of time and achieve better results more quickly.
