Chapter 16

Le Parfait Hotel

Philadelphia

September 26, 2022

All four of the FBI agents sat staring up at the Partridges as Brian finished telling his story about how Lancaster found out about the demise of his scientist friend, and how he jumped back in time to save Truda, who renamed herself Siobhan O’Keefe.

Suddenly out of nowhere, the occupants of the hotel room groaned as the air seemed to shimmer like heat on a sidewalk. The Partridges dropped to the floor, landing on all fours, eyes closed tightly.

“Goddamn it,” Dana said loudly. She was thankful that her tablet was safely tucked against her chest.

“What in the hell was that?” Billy said, as it felt like a hundred needles were being pressed into his brain, then as quickly as it had begun, it stopped, causing the occupants of the room to sigh with relief, eyes fluttering and their breathing slowly returning to normal. “Well, that was unpleasant.”

Dana and Brian carefully got back to their feet.

“What could that have been?” Brian asked with confusion while shaking his head. He felt like he had just woken up after a long sleep, and his mind was racing to catch up.

Dana looked down at the tablet unsure why it was there—until she unlocked the screen and read the first entry. It was then she was glad of her forward planning. “I think I know what happened,” she said looking around the room and once again showed them the tablet. “I left myself a note on this tablet to say on here are copies of all the Lancaster evidence that Billy and Montgomery had taken from the author’s workshop before it exploded. Hopefully the copies will remain on here, as we believe Lancaster Jr. will pop back in time to remove all of his files that we have left in the master bedroom.”

With that, Brian jogged towards the room.

“There’s nothing here,” Brian called out as they heard sorting of paper. “Some bills of sales, but that’s it, the bastard!”

Marcus just nodded his head. “Well then, at least we know that gadget works, and the other thing we know is that Lancaster is one tricky son of a bitch,” he said to the room.

Brian took a seat, and Dana sat on his lap and they started to read through the documents on the tablet.

“That must have been a tough few years for them,” Monty said. “She had lost her brother, parents, and then was yanked out of her timeline by a man who was nearly fifteen years her senior, from another time and country.”

Dana nodded. “Yes, I’m just briefly skimming through his journal, and it does seem like they had a torrid time of it,” she said as she swiped through image after image of the information they had gathered. “Looks like they were using the time machine so she could watch her family before the Germans arrived and took them all away. Siobhan was torn. She could not intervene, as her younger self was still there. That’s when they found out that they couldn’t revisit the same day more than once.
