Chapter Eleven

It had been a month since I had even gone down into the basement. It wasn’t the fact that I had failed again – it was mainly due to the two men who had shot up the police car and, to a lesser extent, me.

Where had they come from? Was I being watched? Or was my browser history being monitored? All the sites I had used were above board, so I decided it was probably best to go cold turkey for a time while recovering from the bullet graze. During that time, I ordered a large greenhouse, which has only just been installed, thank you workmen. That meant I had lots of work to do in terms of getting it ready for planting, so I would have access to plenty of vegetables during the winter.

Also, using my poor woodworking skills, I turned one of the unused outbuildings into a chicken house, with plenty of roosts and access to the grass area outside. I made it especially fox proof, or any other predatory animals come to that.

The next day, a big noisy rooster called Karl was delivered, together with eight clucking ladies to lay eggs for me. The number of eggs would lessen through the winter months, but hey, at least it would keep me busy, along with my running and looking after the garden.

During the evenings, I looked through George Lancaster Jnr’s notes about his trips. Not only that, but I re-read his novels just in case there was anything hidden in his writings – and there it was. I had totally forgotten about the scourge of one of his books, where the main character gets followed throughout the novel from time jump to time jump, all the while being tracked by the men of shadows, who seemed to work for the government.

Even in his personal notes, Lancaster skirted over his jaunts into the past, just noting times and dates, including the events he had witnessed. Mainly, however, he wrote in short bullet points which lacked any concrete facts, unlike his books in so many ways. One night, however, I did notice a passage written in very small, chicken-scratch writing:

7th December 1941, 8 am Hawaiian time
