CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

56 AD

“Come on, guys. There’s a portal behind the general’s tent. I just spotted it. Let’s see where it takes us.”

The three men sauntered around the tent and headed straight to the portal.

“Wait here a minute, guys. I’ll be back in a second. I just want to check it out.”

Lucky disappeared into the portal and reappeared a few moments later.

“Hang on to my belt, Mickey. Stanton, make sure you grab ahold of Mickey’s arm.”

They stepped into the portal and shuffled to their left and then stepped out. “I don’t know about this portal, guys. It reminds me of when Charlie Hodge and me rescued Anastasia from a Russian mob who killed her family and was about to kill her. Lucky we got there in time save her. We might be revisiting the same madness as before.”

Mickey shrugged his shoulders. “Hell, Lucky, right now, we can’t be too choosey. I say let’s go for it.”

“What about you?” Lucky said, pointing to Stanton.

“Whatever you two decide is fine with me.”

Lucky gave a show of agreement. “Okay then let’s do it.”

They stepped out of the portal and into a chaotic lynch mob atmosphere.

“Shit, guys. It looks like we jumped from the frying pan right into the wild, wild west,” Mickey complained in a low voice. Lucky stopped a man who screamed in French.

“Kill them all. Kill them all right now. To the guillotine with them.”

“They’re speaking French, guys.” He turned to an old woman. “What is happening, mademoiselle?”

She looked at them and, seeing the three men dressed all in black, mistook them for executioners.

“What a stupid question you ask me. Why else would you be here but to execute the king and queen. There they are. The citizens are dragging them to the guillotine now. Go and do your duty to France. Behead the two bastards,” the old woman snarled. “Do your duty and kill them.”

Stanton grabbed Lucky. “We’ve got to do something. We can’t just let the mob kill those people.”

Lucky shook his head. “As much as I’d like to save them, I’m afraid we could alter history.” Lucky motioned to Stanton. “Ask the old woman who those people are.”

Stanton tapped the old lady on the shoulder. “Pardonnez-moi, madame, mais qui sont ces personnes?”

The old woman looked at Stanton as if he were crazy when he asked her who the two people were. “Qui veuillez être elles? Louis Seize et Marie Antoinette.”

Stanton turned to tell Lucky what the old woman said, but Lucky just waved his hand.

“I heard what she said. I just don’t know what the right thing to do is.”

Mickey leaned closer and whispered, “I could fire a few shots in the air to get the crowd’s attention while you and Stanton drag the two of them into the portal.”

Lucky lowered his head. He felt like he betrayed a friend, even though he didn’t know the two condemned prisoners.

“No, Mickey. Saving those two would leave ripples in time. And I don’t dare take the chance of fooling with the Almighty’s plan for the future.
