Tomi sat in the green room, wrapping duct tape around her fingers. She was exhausted, as were the other band members, but it had been worth it. They were getting the exposure they had wanted, adding double shows at each bar, and the reviews had been very good.

“Hey, half pint,” Eddie said, sitting next to her. “How's your hand?”

“Hurts like a mofo. Man, I am looking forward to not having to do this every night.”

“Another week, babe. Then back to UNA for our last year.”

“I'm not going back to UNA, Eddie. We talked about this,” she said, looking at his hurt face.

“But everything has changed, Tomi. You found Greg. He was okay,” he begged.

“I know, Eddie,” she said.

“Do you expect us to just pack everything up and leave, too?” he asked, pacing the room. He knew things had been going too well to keep going.

“No,” she said, checking her hair. “You guys can do what you want. I just know that I have to go back home. Morgan offered me a job at the shelter, and I've only got a year of school left.”

Eddie came up behind her and hugged her. “Why do you always do this to me, Tomi? You take my heart, and then rip it out. Don't you love me?” He kissed her bare neck.

“You know how I feel, Eddie. I feel more for you than I thought I could. You guys shouldn't have to pack up and move because of me.”

“Two minutes, guys. Two minutes ‘till show time,” someone yelled from the door.

“Tomi, I can't just pack up and go like you do. My parents will kill me! They bought that house. What am I supposed to do with it?” he asked.

“Sell it and buy one closer to me?” she said lightly.

“Tomi, you don't understand. You don't just sell a house overnight. These things can take months.”

“Look, Eddie. I want us to be together. I want the band together. We've got a lot bigger market back home. We’re ready for a big city. Shit, I gotta get out of the college circus and start thinking about what's ahead. I could have a good job with Morgan. I could really go someplace with it. Besides, things have changed.” She did her last check in the mirror and headed for the door.

“What's changed, Tomi?” Eddie asked, confused by Tomi's seemingly mature attitude.

“Hey, guys,” Tomi said to Andrew and Rick.

They all walked to the backstage.

“What's changed?” Eddie whispered while he strapped his guitar on.

Tomi leaned over and kissed him. Then she whispered in his ear.

“Ladies and gentlemen. We're proud to present Heartless!” The crowd went crazy as the band took the stage. That is, almost the whole band. Eddie was still standing there, trying to figure out if he’d heard Tomi right.
