“What do you mean he left to help me?"

I can feel panic rising from the base of my neck, but I refuse to lose control in front of Natalie. She can already smell my fear. I don't need to add any more to her fuel against me.

"Just what I said," she snaps before she gives Ben and Owen a scorching look. "You two are just as whipped as he is." She motions toward me. They don't like that; they don't like that at all. Immediately, both of them take a step in front of me, and growls like none I've heard from either of them, sounds around us. They bare their teeth, and I think they'll shift at any moment. They're ready to attack, and I have no idea why.

"Ben? Owen?" I call out, hoping my soft voice will sooth them, but they won't take their eyes off Natalie. She's glaring right back at them, as if daring them to make a move. Even though she's not their alpha, she is an alpha. She carries herself as such, and I know for a fact she carries the alpha magic in her blood. Enough of it that she can take on these two large shifters without batting an eye.

"Do not disrespect Maddie in that way again," Owen snaps, his words barely audible between his teeth. His wolf is so close to the surface, I can see it over his human form. I take a step back, afraid I'll do something to set them off, but somehow, I know they're not a danger to me. They're protecting me.

"I may not be your alpha," Natalie says, standing a little taller, her own wolf showing through, "But I will be one day, and there is nothing you can do about that. Not even if what you think is true is true."

"You know it is," Ben replies, his own growl bunching up the words. "And there's nothing you can do about that either."

Now I feel like they're talking in riddles. There has to be a way I can take control, or we'll be in this spitting match for ages, and Aiden will be out there, going through who knows what. Maybe this is foolish of me, but I do the one thing I can think of. I step up to Ben and place a hand on his shoulder. He turns in my direction instantly, his features falling back to normal in the same moment.

"Look, I don't understand what's happening," I say, looking at him before I turn my attention to Natalie. "But you came to me for a reason. If you think I can help, then use me. Aiden is my...trainer." I want to call him so many other things, but this is the safest one. "He's protected me before, and if I can return the favor, then let me."

This sounds a lot more diplomatic than I thought I was capable of. Something flashes in Natalie's eyes, and I wonder if it's a bit of respect.
