Involuntarily, Thomas moved back a little.

“See, even you are horrified by me now.”

The letter “R” had been branded into the flesh of Mosa’s face. “R” for runaway, for having tried to flee.

“No, I’m not horrified. I’m mad, mad at them, that they are allowed to do such things to another person. The sooner you’re out of the South, the happier I’ll be. Did Bennett tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

“Why you are free?”

Mosa shook her head. Thomas reached out for her hands.

“Let’s sit down. There’s something I need to tell you. It will come as a shock.”

They both sat down on the log. He coughed nervously.

“You’re… you’re my sister. We have the same mother and father.”

Mosa’s look was one of complete bewilderment.

“But how is that possible? You’re white. I’m the result of some rape or illicit affair between a slave woman and a white man.”

“That’s what we all assumed. The night I came back to get you, Maisie told me the truth. She was there when you were born. She saw our mother give birth to you. Our father ordered Maisie to drown you in the river, but she took you to the Brown's plantation. It seems our great-great-grandmother was mixed race, her father was an African. My grandmother swore an oath to that effect. Maisie said the doctor at your birth said it can show up unexpectedly in a later generation.”

Mosa bit her lip.

“Well, aren’t you going to say something?” asked Thomas.

“Say what? What am I supposed to say? That I fell in love with a man who I’m now told is my brother?” Her eyes were rheumy.

“Yeah, it’s awful hard, I know. I felt the same way about you, but we’re just gonna have to move on. We have no choice, Mosa. I’ll always love you, but it can only be as a brother.”

“You won’t be coming with me, then?”

“No, I’ll be going back to the plantation. Don't worry though, I’ve almost two hundred dollars left to my name. You can have what remains to set you up once we’ve got back to Charleston and paid for your passage North.”

Mosa remained crestfallen. Thomas tried to lighten the situation.

"Hey, I brought you a dress to wear. Why don’t you go into the hut and try it on.”

Thomas retrieved the dress from the cart and handed it to her.

“You look wonderful,” he said when she emerged after changing.

The dress was a striking purple with lace at the collar and wrists. Mosa made no comment and didn’t even smile.

“Come on, we ought to go. I don’t want you spending another minute here.”

They set off. Neither spoke. What more could they say? Their history dictated their future. A future of separation.

“Wait here. I’m gonna get you something. I don’t think you need it, but if it makes you feel happier, it’ll be worth it,” said Thomas when they arrived in Macon.

He returned with a big white parasol.

“Just like the ladies use,” he said, handing it to her.

Mosa gave him a weak smile and held it so that it hid the left side of her face.
