For 1950 and 1977, the % aged variable is the strongest, explaining respectively 34 and 50 percent of the variance in social spending. For 1977, the Weighted Cabinet Shares variable explains about 27 percent of the variance. For the post-war era, then, we are confronted with the classical juxtaposition of a power-based and a functionalist-demographic theory. To estimate their relative stength, the two variables are entered simultaneously in a simple multivariate OLS model:
