Think back to a turning point in your life

Think about your own life and you’ll see exactly what I mean. If you had a tough time in your childhood, for example, you are only able to make sense of it now, as the person you are today. Perhaps something happened that you haven’t thought about in years. And then, one day, all of a sudden, you recall that experience in great detail. That’s usually not just by chance.

You see, your own history is not at all fixed in time. It’s only from your present vantage point that you are able to welcome it, or not, and a particular episode from your life may resurface or stay buried. A past event, which was difficult and painful at the time, might seem worthwhile to you now because it opened doors that you would never have found otherwise.

Being human means understanding that—just as we do with the history of the world—we constantly need to rethink our past.
