CHAPTER 29

How different everything was! When she had gone into the Imperial doctor’s the sun had been high, the shadows short, and the street full of people. But now the street was quieter, the shadows were deep and there were even one or two lanterns burning in windows. She shivered. The air felt chilled. Where had the time gone?

As soon as the doctor had told her that Wan Yi was the woman in the beautiful dress, Sara had run into the street, but there was no sign of Wan Yi. Still, the doctor had an address, which he had reluctantly given to Sara. Now she knew where Wan Yi lived and her leg felt better. Thank goodness! All she had to do was go to the address and give the piece of silk to Wan Yi and Wan Yi would tell her how to get home. Simple! Easy! No problem! After all, why wouldn’t an ancient Chinese silk merchant know about time travel? Why wouldn’t she be able to solve a puzzle that would baffle Einstein? She was the smartest person in Bianjing!

Although Wan Yi was the best hope Sara had, and although she tried to cling to it, she couldn’t. The idea of being stuck in the painting forever and never seeing her family or friends again overwhelmed her. She swallowed hard. Not for the first time, she wondered why all of this had happened to her. A tear trickled down her cheek. She wiped it away angrily.

‘Stop it!’ she told herself. ‘I’ve been lucky. The boat saved me from Mo Zei’s gang, the storyteller gave me food, and the doctor agreed to treat me. I was an arm’s length away from Wan Yi and now I have her address. Be positive! Things could be worse. They often are in nightmares.’ She gulped. She really hoped it wasn’t going to turn into one of her nightmares. No! That won’t happen! She would get out of the painting sooner or—

Suddenly something grabbed her neck and pulled her sideways so hard and so fast that both of her legs were lifted off the ground. Kicking like mad, Sara tried to escape, but she was heaved through the air until – THUMP! She was dumped on the ground like a bag of rubbish. Her neck was locked in someone’s arm. She twisted her head around. She gazed in astonishment at what she saw.

The terrifying face of Mo Zei was grinning back at her.

Mo Zei tightened his arm around Sara’s neck. ‘Give it to me!’ he breathed in her ear. ‘Give me the silk.’

Sara struggled in vain. ‘You’re choking me,’ she managed to gasp. Already, blackness was fogging her mind, shutting down her brain…

‘We followed the old man for three weeks,’ Mo Zei was saying. ‘He slipped through our grasp at a great market in Urumqi. Now our journey ends here. Now the silk is finally ours.’

Sara knew she was about to faint. She also knew that if she did, Mo Zei would take the piece of silk and her mission to return it to Wan Yi would have failed.
