Part Three

Chapter One

“Wow!” Travis said, eyes wide in wonder. “This is amazing!”

He was right too, the Grand Canyon Skywalk was a truly unique experience – a horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge which incorporated a glass walkway that looked right down into the canyon, hundreds of feet below. It was a terrifying view, but we accepted it readily, knowing that it helped our cover as tourists.

We’d spent the previous day in conversation, Travis telling me more about what had happened, as I’d shared stories about my own life. We’d eaten the squirrel and – once darkness had fallen – I’d collected water from the river.

The next day had been similar, and Kane had brought us some more meat as we’d rested up, renewing our strength as we readied ourselves to move on. Travis was starting to confide in me more and more, and I was becoming close to him, perhaps closer than I’d felt to a kid before. It scared me, but I accepted my responsibility – I needed to protect him, and I was going to do everything in my power to make sure that he came out of this thing without a scratch.

We’d hiked up and away from the cave when the first faint light of dawn was grazing the horizon, careful to keep low as we went, in case the cops – or anyone else – were out searching for us. We hadn’t seen anyone though, and we’d headed in what I thought was the rough direction of the tourist attractions at Eagle Point, going off the maps of the area that I’d studied back on the boat.

We’d held back, then joined the throngs as they’d arrived, just blended right in with the rest of the tourists. Our clothes were dry now, and fairly clean after their wash in the Colorado, and we looked like a father and son out on a trip. If anyone had made a connection between us and the pictures plastered over the news, it didn’t show. It didn’t surprise me too much – we didn’t look too much like the pictures I’d seen, and anyway, the tourists here had much more exciting things to look at than the two of us. Added to which, most people – I hoped – assumed we were dead.

After the walk around the cantilever, we followed the rest of the crowds, some of whom were heading toward the free shuttle bus. We got on, mixing with everyone else, nobody paying us any attention. It was a psychological thing, really – we were acting like everyone else and we became part of the group, and were therefore completely ignored. If we’d been skulking around on the periphery, people might have paid attention to us, noticed our odd behavior and maybe put two and two together. Sometimes, it was best to hide in plain sight.

The hop-on bus started moving, and headed south toward the Grand Canyon West heliport. I didn’t have to check on Kane, confident he would be shadowing us every step of the way, using the local cover so he wouldn’t be seen.
