“WE’RE NEVER GOING to find anything in here.” Mac groaned as we walked through the door of the library. I was afraid he might be right. When Maddie, my new hairdresser, had said Sterling worked at the library down the street, we thought we’d hit the jackpot, but now I wasn’t so sure. I had known it was big, but this was overwhelming. We had our work cut out for us. “Where do you want to start?”

“I don’t know, but we can’t just stand here, blocking the door. Let’s walk around. Maybe something will hit me.”

“Like what? A sign with a missing letter? Oh. Maybe a book this time.”

“You think you’re funny, but you’re not. It’s the sugar talking. I warned you not to eat all that pie.”

“I am funny, and it’s not the pie. I want to go back there for dinner. That is if we ever manage to find our way out of this place. It’s like a maze in here. Your hair looks really cute by the way.”

“Thanks.” He was babbling, and it seemed best to just ignore him. I was pretty sure it was the sugar and made a mental note to have Jenny check his levels when we got back. I spotted a sign for information and veered in that direction. Right there on the counter was a map of the library and I snagged one.

“What are you looking for?” Mac asked, hovering over my shoulder.

“The offices. Maddie said she worked here, but I don’t picture Sterling as the librarian type. More the computer geek that keeps things running from the back room.” I looked over at the smiling woman behind the desk, fielding all the questions and dealing with the public with the patience of a saint. Sterling was a loner, not a people person. No way she’d tolerate that for more than a minute. We’d find her behind closed doors, away from the fray. “Place this size must have an IT department. If she doesn’t work there, I’m betting they know her.”

“There.” Mac pointed to a section on the map and then looked up. “Fourth floor. It’s either there or the basement. I don’t think they’re going to let us in either area without a fight. Maybe we should just ask someone in the main office. See if we can get an address.”

“Maybe.” I really didn’t want to go that route unless we had no other option. Businesses weren’t all that agreeable to giving out information on their employees. We’d stand a better chance of finding what we needed if we found someone she hung out with. Getting some search time in her office would be a bonus. “Let’s try something else first. We need to find a computer store nearby.”

Mac pulled out his phone and located a store within a few blocks. The minute we walked in the door and the manager greeted us, I knew we’d come to the right place. Twenty minutes and a pile of brochures later, we left
