Lord Izzy looked at the Priests and Hunters sitting around the long table in the Academy conference room. They had been there for hours, tired, frustrated, and getting hungry, but they would remain for hours more if that was what it would take.

Bishop Jericho had given him full command of the active squad for the upcoming mission involving the Nine, but he’d also placed Lady Shakira in charge of the stationary team. She would handle diplomatic affairs, paperwork, shuffling funds to gather proper supplies, and clearing students for the mission if they passed recruitment requirements. All Izzy had to worry about was the footwork. Where they were going, how they would get there, and what would happen once they reached the Nine’s lair.

It was easier to put that together in one’s head than with a team of ten people.

First of all, the Hunters Division didn’t take lightly to accepting commands from a Priest, even one as high-ranking as Lord Izzy. Major Marshall wore a pleasant smile on his kind face throughout the meeting, but Izzy could see the frustration beginning to set in.

It was plain and clear that Captain Payne was annoyed; she let go of a huff every few seconds and made it a point to disagree with Lady Shakira at every turn. Mercifully, Marlo Jo was there to keep the peace, arguing on behalf of the Cross and the Academy.

Lord Izzy sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. He could feel his sandy blonde hair sticking to his forehead from sweat. He was hot and tired and could use a bowl of stew, but they’d barely covered the funding for the mission. They still had to decide on recruitment and travel arrangements. He couldn’t give up now.

“We’re settling on two-thousand gold coins. That should provide payment to all parties involved and purchase proper gear for the team.” Izzy glanced at Vehenort who immediately shuffled through her scrolls and slips of parchment to find their list of soldiers to recruit. “Now,” Izzy took the paper she’d extended to him, “let’s decide what the team will look like.”

“No students,” Marlo Jo immediately protested, much to Captain Payne’s displeasure.

“The Academy needs all the help we can get. We’ll recruit anyone who is healthy and capable,” she retorted.

“You haven’t seen the students when they return from these missions,” Marlo Jo argued. “It damages them more than you think. Spiritually, emotionally—”

“We’re all emotionally damaged,” Major Marshall drawled. He leaned back in his chair and stretched. “You think it’s any easier for us to go out there and see the world for what it is and then come back just so someone higher up can pat us on the back and say, good job?” He shook his head. “It’s not easy for anyone. It never gets easier.”

“Which is why we should protect these children from it for as long as possible,” Marlo argued.

“We should harden them to it,” Captain Payne said. “This is not the time to train sissies for battle.”

“Being impacted by death doesn’t make you a sissy,” Marlo said quickly.
