I watched them leave and then made a few notes in my notebook. My suspicions that Mr and Mrs Hotham had disliked the sisters were confirmed, but I was still short of any evidence that they had murdered them. In fact there was little evidence to suggest the sisters had been murdered at all. I thought back to Emma Sheridan trying to speak to me just before I left on that first day. If she hadn’t apprehended me then I wouldn’t have had much reason to suspect anything. But because she had, I had to keep searching for the answer. I couldn’t rest until I knew what she had wanted to tell me.

The grey-eyed woman approached me and I realised we were the only two people left in the tea rooms. I smiled but I felt my skin prickle.

“I second what Miss Berkeley says,” she said. I frowned, irritated that she had been listening to the conversation. “You’re a news reporter are you? You need to be careful with Mr and Mrs Hotham.” Her gaze was unblinking and I wondered how much she knew about the Sheridan sisters.

“Emma Sheridan wanted to tell me something. It was something about her sister’s death and then Mr Hotham appeared and stopped her. Have you any idea what it could have been?”

“No, none at all. She was a strange one.”

“Why was she strange?”

The woman shrugged. “I never took to her. She weren’t as popular with the girls as you might think.”

“Why not?”

She didn’t answer my question. “You realise a few of the teachers are related?”

“Miss Berkeley told me she was the sisters’ cousin.”

“There was another cousin too, she left last year. There are rumours of blue blood in the family. Links to royalty.”

“Really?”

“Miss Berkeley and the sisters had an Aunt or Great Aunt who died recently and was a Dame.”

“Do you know her name?”

“Sorry I don’t. There’s lots I could tell you if I chose to but I should close now. I’ve had enough customers for the day.”

“I see.” I put my notebook in my handbag and put on my jacket.

“Be careful now.”

“I will.” I held her gaze for a moment longer but I looked away before she did.
