Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport Rome, Italy

Acton smiled at the sight of Reading and Giasson waiting on the tarmac for them, the Vatican Inspector General’s position giving him privileged access, and Reading’s Interpol ID likely helping. Laura rushed down the steps and embraced Reading. “It’s so good to see you!” She leaned back, placing a hand on his chest. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine.”

She frowned. “You shouldn’t be pushing yourself like this.”

He gave her a look. “If you two didn’t keep getting into trouble, I wouldn’t have to.”

She gave him a peck on the cheek. “Sorry.”

Acton shook Giasson’s hand. “Good to see you again, Mario.”

“Likewise, though it would be nice to see you just once without some emergency attached.” He eyed Leather’s security team already spread out, covering the area. “Please tell me they’re unarmed.”

“They are. Though, we might need that rectified.”

Giasson chuckled. “I’ll see what I can do.” He raised a finger. “If it becomes necessary, of course.”

Acton traded positions with his wife, greeting his friend. “It’s good to see you, Hugh.”

His old friend frowned at him. “I wish I could say the same. How the hell did you get mixed up in this?”

Acton shrugged as Giasson led them toward the terminal. “Wrong place at the wrong time, I guess.”

“You seem to have a knack for finding the wrong place and the wrong time.”

Acton grinned. “It’s a gift.”

Reading gave him a look. “It seems more like a curse.”

“Tomayto, tomawto.”

Reading grunted and thanked one of Leather’s men holding open the door for them. They entered and quickly cleared customs, a mere formality with both the Vatican and Interpol present. They piled into the Vatican-plated SUV, Giasson up front with the driver, Acton, Laura, and Reading in the middle row, Leather’s team in the back.

Giasson turned in his seat. “I assume you have a plan?”

Laura sighed. “Not really. When I called you, we were looking for a refuge to avoid the Chinese until we could figure something out. Now they’ve given us seventy-two hours to produce the sword. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do with respect to that.”

Acton put an arm around her shoulders. “We didn’t want to risk any communications while we were in the air, just in case the Chinese had managed to compromise the system. What’s the latest from Dylan and the others?”

Reading angled to face his friends. “Well, the latest from them is that, thanks to me and my Interpol contacts, they now have someone to search for.”

Acton chuckled. “Sorry, Hugh. Didn’t mean to give Langley all the credit.”

“Uh-huh. Just remember, I’m using up vacation days to be here.”

Laura squeezed his hand. “Retire, we’ll pay your pension.”

Reading grunted. “One of these days, I just might take you up on that offer. But until then, the last we have is that the CIA lost track of the curator in New Delhi. They’re assuming he’s already moved on, executing an escape plan he’s probably had in place for years. Depending on where he ultimately ends up and how careful he is, they may never find him.
