TWENTY-SEVEN
Yamamoto was not a happy man. Word had leaked that the sword had returned to Japan and been stolen. It was a disaster, both personally and professionally. In Japan, there was little room for the avoidance of responsibility. Yamamoto knew the future of his career was at stake. If he failed to recover the sword within a reasonable time, he would be replaced. His past successes would be forgotten, his name stained with the shame of failure. He would be forever known as the man who had allowed the Honjo Masamune to fall into the hands of criminals.
It was unfair, but it was the way things were.
Nick and Selena had been brought to public security headquarters in Chiyoda City, a special ward within Tokyo. They'd been offered tea and placed in a room with Western-style furniture that was comfortable enough. A man stood guard outside the door. They weren't prisoners, but it was clear they were not free to go.
"How did the bad guys know we were coming to Japan?" Nick said. "It wasn't public knowledge."
"They must have been watching us," Selena said. "It would be simple enough. Follow us to the airport, find out what flight we were on, and go on from there."
"These people are really well-organized. Setting up a professional ambush like that? I have to hand it to them."
"You surprised that first man, hitting him with the sword case like that."
"He's lucky it wasn't the sword."
The door opened. Daichi Yamamoto entered, accompanied by a personal assistant carrying a laptop. Nick and Selena stood.
"Mister Carter, Doctor Connor. I am Daichi Yamamoto. I'm sorry for the inconvenient delay. I hope you haven't had an unpleasant wait?"
"The tea was excellent," Selena said.
"Please, sit."
They sat. Yamamoto said to Nick, "I understand you disabled two of the attackers. That was well done."
The assistant began recording the interview.
"Thanks. Tell me, how is your agent, Kensaku?"
"I am sorry to say that he died an hour ago."
"Shit."
"Yes. That is an appropriate comment. Still, you did what you could."
"I wish I could have prevented the loss of the sword. The third man would have killed Selena. There wasn't anything I could do."
"What did you notice about this third man?"
"He was a little shorter than you, and his face was rounder. He looked like one of your policeman. His bike looked like a police bike. He had a police helmet on and a radio clipped to his shoulder. They had it set up to look like an accident. Akio never had a chance. The man signaled us to stop. As soon as Akio rolled down his window, he shot him, then he shot Kensaku."
"And then?"
"Then two men with guns piled out of the white van and ran toward us. I opened the door and hit the first one with the sword case. I picked up his gun and shot the second man. That was when Selena told me to stop or the phony cop would kill her."
"You are convinced he meant to shoot?"
"I was. His face was distorted with anger.
