David hooked his arm through Trina’s and escorted her from the kitchen and into the office where Reuben sat in Ivan’s chair behind the desk, shaking his head and shuffling papers.

“I don’t know what any of this stuff is,” he muttered.

“Stocks. Taxes. Investments. Gains and losses.

Property. Ivan sure had his fingers in a lot of pies. How’d he keep it all straight? “

“He used a secretarial service based in Juneau,” David said.

“Mostly, they’d just fax documents back and forth or use the computer modem. But a clerk comes out once a week to do all the filing and take care of the paperwork details.”

“Got a name for this service?”

“Elite, I think. Or High Tech.” David shrugged.

“We can check with Ivan’s lawyer, Darien Greenlee. He’s in Juneau, too.”

“Where do we start?” Reuben spread his big hands to encompass the whole room.

“I don’t know which end is up.”

“I have a suggestion,” Trina said. She’d worked as a secretary for years, and the procedures didn’t vary all that much from one place to the next.

“If Ivan had clerical help, I would assume the files were well labeled and in order so that he could easily find any document he needed to put his hands on.”

“Correct,” David said.

“Let’s assume the person who searched in here was looking for a document. He or she could probably find the file they needed Without too much trouble.” She looked at the two men.

“Yes?”

“Keep going,” Reuben said.

“And the rest of this clutter is a cover-up so that no one will know what they were looking for.”

“How do you explain the computer damage and the busted fax machine?”

“Same thing. To destroy files.” She stepped around the desk and regarded the computer. The screen was broken, and the hard drive was smashed.

“What happened to the disks?”

“These?” Reuben pointed to a stack of small plastic disks that looked like they’d been whacked with a hammer.

She frowned.

“Maybe an expert could reconstruct this information. But it seems to me that Ivan’s computer files are pretty much wiped out. As for the fax, well, maybe Ivan was expecting a fax communication that the person who created this mess didn’t want him to receive. ” This all sounds reasonable,” David said, ” but I’m not sure how it’s going to help us find what’s missing. “

“AssUme that the searcher found the file right away without any trouble. Then created the rest of this mess.

The important file will be near the bottom of the pile. unless he or she removed it. “

She stepped over the dUmped trash basket and stood in front of the file drawers. Picking through the stacks, she selected three files and read the labels.

“Ermine. Environment.

And Quilting. “

She placed a file in each of their hands, giving the smaller files—Ermine and Quilting—to David and Reuben.

She kept the thick Environment for herself, assuming that s’nice she had been trained as a secretary and was accustomed to shuffling papers, she’d be more likely to pick out oddities.

“What are we looking for?” Reuben asked.

“Anything that’s out of order.
