CHAPTER 8
The Hall of Mirrors
Moments later the Super Girls found themselves in a room similar to the great ballroom at Horseforth Manor. Huge mirrors lined the walls, stretching just shy of the ceiling. Reflected in them, beautiful crystal chandeliers, ablaze, perhaps left on in anticipation of a visit? The floor resembled a deep black frozen lake. It was so shiny in fact, it looked as if you would slip over on it, or worse still, fall through it.
“Are we back at Horseforth?” asked Wasp innocently, not fully recovered from her walk across the invisible bridge.
“No,” said Angel, taking up Wasp’s hand to comfort her against certain disappointment.
“How do you know for sure?” enquired BB.
“No windows,” replied Solo and Roo simultaneously.
BB took a second look, “no there aren’t,” she remarked with a look of perplexity.
“How odd, it’s like one of those pairs of pictures where you have to spot the differences.”
“This is still the labyrinth alright,” said Willow, her tone grave and resigned.
“Well,” she continued a little more optimistically, “what say we set to work?”
“How do you mean?” asked Wasp, a wrinkle forming above her brow.
“The second piece of the urn,” replied Willow, as if surprised even Wasp had asked such a question.
“Oh of course,” said Wasp, “absolutely.”
“But where could you hide it in here? the place is empty, no cupboards, no shelves, nothing,” BB observed.
Suddenly! there was a loud bang, which seemed to come from behind where the girls were standing. All of them shot their heads around, startled by the sudden intrusion upon the silence.
“What’s that?!” panted Angel, her face pale with shock. Roo took the initiative to investigate first, walking in the general direction of where the noise seemed to originate. The rest of the Super Girls followed in short order, gathering near the site they entered the room.
“Look!” said Angel,” the opening we came through, it’s gone.” Reaching out, she ran her hands over the wall, but there was no evidence of it ever existing.
“Perhaps the second piece of the urn is behind one of these panels?” suggested Solo, tapping at one to see what sound it would make.
“Seems pretty solid to me,” said Angel.
“Yes I think you’re right,” agreed Solo.
“We’ll have to go around the room, see if we can’t find a hollow spot,” said Willow.
“I’ll go to the right with Angel and Solo.”
“BB, Momo, Wasp and Roo you take the left.”
“What if it’s hidden higher than we can reach?” asked Angel.
“We will have to go around again on each other’s shoulders or something,” said Willow dismissively.
“Anyway, we will cross that bridge when we come to it.”
In response to her comment the rest of the girls looked upon her searchingly.
An awkward smile crept over Willow’s face.
“Perhaps that wasn’t the best expression to use,” she conceded.
Moments later, the ballroom came alive with the sound of knuckles tapping at its walls, not an altogether pleasing sound but necessary all the same.
As they progressed slowly and hopefully along, their knuckles became red and sore from continuous use. BB turned around, suggesting to Willow they rest for a few minutes.
