CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

WEDNESDAY, 11TH JULY

Dowrtreven, Helford River,

Cornwall

‘Dad, you’ve got to see this,’ Milla said as she ran into Nick’s office without knocking. ‘There’s been a shark attack and a surfer’s been injured.’

Nick looked up at his daughter. ‘What do you mean? Where?’

‘Look, I’ll show you.’ Milla knelt down next to Nick, putting her phone down on his desk. She played him the numerous videos and photos of the incident that had been uploaded already onto social media.

Most were images of the injured surfer, lying on the ground, the police car arriving, followed by the air ambulance. Nick was impressed at the clarity of both the videos and the photos, especially the one that showed the teeth marks on the bottom of the surfboard. He was relieved to see that the surfer was able to stroke his dog and wave to onlookers before being loaded into the helicopter.

‘Does it say where this incident occurred?’ Nick asked

‘Yes, look there – Chapel Porth. Where’s that?’

‘It’s a very pretty bay on the north coast. We went there years ago but you’d have been too young to remember,’ Nick said, pointing out the location on the map of Cornwall that hung on his office wall. ‘Please can you send a couple of those videos to me. I want to show them to Emma.’

‘Of course,’ Milla said. ‘I’ll do it now.’

‘Great, thanks.’ Nick picked up his own phone and got up to leave the office. ‘By the way, have you seen Emma?’

‘She’s out on the terrace going through some stuff with Jill.’

‘Okay. Thank you for bringing me up to date - much appreciated.’

‘I keep telling you, that’s what social media’s for!’ Milla teased him as she followed Nick onto the terrace.

‘And that’s why I’ve got you to look at everything for me,’ Nick replied over his shoulder. He climbed down the steps to the lower terrace where the two women were totally engrossed in whatever was on the laptop’s screen.

‘Morning, you two,’ Nick called out, approaching the table. They looked up briefly

‘Nick, have you seen this?’ Jill asked.

Nick moved behind them to see what Jill was referring to. It was the same video he’d been watching only a moment before.

‘That’s exactly what I was coming out to show you,’ he said and started to smile.

‘Well it certainly isn’t what we wanted to see, is it?’ Emma pointed out, raising her eyebrows.

Nick moved to the other side of the table and sat down opposite them.

‘No, you’re right there Emma. The proverbial is definitely going to be hitting the fan in the corridors of Whitehall. I’d imagine Mr LeGrand is currently being briefed by some poor, hapless underling.’ Nick lent forward in his chair. ‘Anyway, I’m not worried about him, I’m more concerned about that poor surfer. Is there an update on his condition yet?’

‘Hold on a moment,’ Jill said as she typed. ‘Yes, there’s something on the live news feed. It says the hospital’s confirmed that a male patient arrived by air ambulance earlier this morning and is undergoing urgent surgery.
