Chapter Seven – Slow Burn

In the weeks and then months that followed, Suzanne found herself gratefully falling into Simon’s schedule. In a strange way, knowing that he was responsible for keeping her on track was oddly comforting to her. She found herself managing to do what she’d never been able to do before…become disciplined in her daily life. She showed up at all meals and other parts of her schedule as demanded and rarely earned correction for tardiness. She began to look forward to and even enjoy her mandated work time with Mrs. White. As the two of them worked side by side, Suzanne learned quite a lot about Simon and his history. Mrs. White had many tales of woe concerning the arranged marriage his parents had set up for him that’d gone wrong. She swore that Mr. Bancroft was never the same after he lost his promised bride. Looking at Suzanne she said, “You are the first woman he’s had staying here.” When she said this her eyes would glint with some hidden meaning.

The two of them also shared their experiences dealing with a dominant male. There had been a few times that Suzanne had heard cries coming from the quarters shared by Phipps and Mrs. White in the south wing of the house. She’d closely questioned Mrs. White after these incidents. Mrs. White blushed when put on the spot. “I’m loudest when Phipps takes me after a correction. I will attempt to keep it down from now on.” Ducking her head she showed Suzanne the tasks she needed to accomplish for the day.

Suzanne excelled at her studies and rarely earned punishment spankings from Simon for poor study habits. She’d finished Lady Chatterley’s Lover in record time. Simon suggested she start reading D.H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow and then Women in Love as her next reading assignments. Suzanne gladly agreed. She’d discovered an interest in D.H. Lawrence’s works after reading Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Their afternoon teas were spent discussing her reading assignments. Simon was always impressed with her insightful commentary on the books they discussed. As far as her preparation for the GED, Suzanne cruised along earning impressive scores on the study tests. By the fourth month of her time spent with Simon, Suzanne was almost done with the GED study guide. Simon set up an official GED test for her in nearby Everett on the following week. Suzanne waited for the test in tense anticipation.

The following week, Suzanne took the test in Everett and was pleasantly surprised to find that she passed with flying colors. Simon hugged her in congratulation and treated her to a dinner out to celebrate her achievement. Wrapping his hands around hers at the table, he smiled at her in appreciation. “I am so proud of you Darling. What would you like to do next?”

Suzanne looked at him with a furrowed brow. “What do you mean? I didn’t really plan to pursue a GED.”

Simon smiled at her warmly. “I am happy to pay your way through community college while you are with me if you’d like to continue your studies.
