"You look adorable as the day I caught you, Drago."

MAYCE

As soon as we step through the portal, the energy of the environment ripples across our bodies. It hums like a tempting siren, tickling the inner layer of my skin, and warming my blood. I smirk at the sight of Drago, who itches at his scales, flaring them in annoyance.

“I hate this damned place,” he grumbles and surveys the area.

I look around, appreciating the enchanting beauty of the shifting flora and fauna with its ever-changing patterns. “Only natural as it was created by and for Fae, so we could—”

“I know, I know.” Drago lifts a hand. “So the holier-than-thou Fae gods and goddesses could learn, study, and practice all their bloody mud powers.” He scratches the back of his neck, then his side again.

Posturing, I tug at my robes and gesture for him to follow. “Our races are so different, it’s a wonder we bonded so.”

“You know very well why we bonded so, you prissy, shiny, fucking Fae.” Drago snorts and rips his tunic, prompting a smirk to tug at one side of my mouth. All his scales flare in and out, reminding me of gills.

“I told you when I caught you like I’ll tell you today, my brother.” I wink at my partner as we pass a tree with its vines curling toward the dragon. He swats them away one at a time, and a breathy laugh breaks from my nostrils as they swat him back. “Your race was still crawling on your bellies like wyrms while mine was building temples and monuments and architectural feats that spanned the test of time and grew in synchronized harmony with nature.”

By the time I’ve finished my statement, the vines have multiplied. Like dozens of tentacles, they tangle around my partner, pecking at him as he claws at them, snarling. Any time he breaks one, three more grow and take its place. Knotted together in triune cords, they are not easily broken. A handful of seconds pass before my partner is properly trussed. Several vine cords bind his throat to their host tree while the rest have coiled around his limbs, spreading him like a starfish dragon.

I lift a brow as he flexes all his muscles, opening his mouth to roar fire. Until the vines squeeze his throat, denying him the opportunity. He growls through his nostrils, spitting out sparks. More vines rise, wagging before his eyes as if taunting him, mocking the dragon.

Tilting my chin to one side, I examine my partner while circling him. “You look as adorable as the day I caught you, Drago.”

“You did this, didn’t you, you fucking leafblood?” he gruffly asks, eyes darting to each side, muscles wrestling with the vines.

“No need for language, dragon. I told you that then, too,” I add while dragging my fingertip along his naked back, all the way up his spine.

“Get me out of these things, you overblown, spear-eared, dandelion eater!” He twists and writhes his body, but they only grow stronger.
