Three days later, Abs got a text from Hayley asking if she was busy. She wasn’t, and when she went over to Hayley’s place, the two ended up in bed together. The same thing happened that weekend, when Gracie was out with friends at the movies. And then again, and again, and again. But Hayley never brought up the possibility of them having anything more together. As far as she was concerned, it was just about sex. Sex that no one else was going to know about, especially not her daughter.

Abs was perfectly happy with whatever arrangement they’d managed to strike up. Hayley was beautiful (despite the comments she made about herself at the gym), and a casual, stress free fuck buddy relationship that didn’t really have any negatives to it in Abs’s mind. Things carried on like that between the two of them for another few weeks until one night she got a text from Hayley while she was at the bar with Logan and some of the other trainers.

While she’d been bringing the round of drinks back from the table, Abs had felt her cell phone buzzing in her pocket. She’d missed a call, and possibly a text too from the feel of things. Once she’d handed everyone’s drinks out and brought the tray back to the bartender, she pulled her phone out to check who wanted her attention so badly.

The text was from Hayley, the missed call was too. Something was up; since the two of them had slept together, Hayley was putting distance between them. She opened the message to see what Hayley wanted and was surprised by the message.

You busy?

That was all it said. Nothing about ‘Hey, come over’, or ‘Hey, Gracie isn’t home right now…’ There were none of the normal innuendos or jokes that usually came with one of her invitations.

“You alright?”

Abs barely even heard Logan’s voice as she looked at the message, a little confused. She texted back a quick What’s up? only to see that the message was read immediately. Hayley must have had their messages open, and in a few seconds, she saw the tell-tale three dots to show that she was typing a message.

Just wanted to talk, that’s all

Rough day at work? Abs sent back. She knew that a rough day at work for Hayley was going to be a lot worse than what most other people found themselves up against.

Yes, Hayley replied. There was a pause, and then another message came through. Are you busy right now?

Abs glanced up from her phone to look across the table. Logan had mostly turned her attention back to Sapphy, and they were having an intense conversation about some new programs they were looking at introducing, but Abs noticed that her gaze flickered over to check on her.

No

She typed the message out, and her thumb hovered over the send key as a little creeping sensation of guilt came over her. She felt bad for dipping out of the night like this, but she also didn’t want Hayley to struggle with whatever had happened at work on her own.
