Back in the alley, the older man was berating the younger one.

‘You useless prick, you didn’t even hit him! You told me you’d give the Englishman a good hiding but he put you on the floor and got clean away.’

‘I think I got him on the arm. He was very quick and hit me hard.’ Tenderly, he rubbed his jaw. ‘I don’t think it’s broken but it’s very sore.’

‘Serves you right,’ said Luigi. ‘My master will not be pleased.’ He was not looking forward to reporting the debacle to Signor Falcone. The other man grunted. ‘Come on, now, pick up that book and the box and we’ll be off.’

As they were turning to go, Luigi noticed the black, wide-brimmed hat, which George had been wearing, lying in the gutter.

‘Pick that up, please,’ said Luigi. ‘At least we’ll have something to show il capo.’
