They sat in a dim room like a movie theater, with a screen at the front, but with only about eight seats. Jenny fiddled with her Stormpad and a map appeared onscreen, displaying North and South America, then zoomed in on a red-highlighted portion of South America that covered almost the whole bottom half of the continent.

“Argentina,” Jenny said. “The second-largest country in South America. A million square miles, ranging from rough mountain terrain to fertile valleys. It’s also one of the world’s biggest honey exporters. Our intelligence indicates that Vindiqo has a secret outpost in the southern Andes Mountains, and while we can’t be sure, we suspect they’ve got a lab there, developing bees.”

The image on the screen changed again, showing a satellite picture of rectangular buildings nestled in mountains. “This is a Vindiqo factory,” she said. “It’s supposed to be a soybean processing plant, but intel suggests it’s actually something else.”

“We want to know what they’re up to. Are they creating more bees? If so, what are the bees going to be used for? We’ll be dropping you three in a position to the north, hopefully beyond their area of surveillance. Your cover, in case you’re spotted, is you’re high school kids on a camping expedition. You’ve lost the rest of your troop. Details and your cover names are in the mission briefing.” She passed out three folders. “Memorize them and destroy the documents. And whatever you do, do not enter the base. If there’s something illegal going on, contact me and we’ll discuss possible options.”

She handed them each a small case, about a hand’s-width wide. “To help with surveillance, we’ll provide each of you with one of these. These are the latest version of our flying bugs. They’re small, quiet, and fast, and they can transmit video and audio back to your Stormpads. Get close to the facility and send these gadgets flying in to get a better look — especially inside the buildings, if possible. Once we know what we’re dealing with, we’ll send in reinforcements. And Filby, you’ve got the bombs, right?”

“Bombs?” Lizzie gasped with excitement.

“Pheromone bombs,” Filby said.

“Brutal,” Lizzie said, as Filby handed them out.

“What’s a pheromone?” asked Jake.

“It’s the way bees communicate,” said Jenny. “Different pheromones have different smells, and one might mean, hello chaps, there’s nectar over here.” All three agents stifled laughs at her terrible English accent. She sounded like she was impersonating the Beekeeper. “Sorry, aren’t bees British? Anyhow, there are other pheromones that say ‘send doctors,’ or ‘follow me.’ The pheromones in these bombs are called the Attack Pheromone — they’ll make Vindiqo bees attack other Vindiqo bees. There’s also a poison mixed in, which won’t hurt humans but will slowly kill off any remaining bees.”

“Sweet,” Lizzie said, handling one of the small bombs.

“They’re just for self-defense,” Jenny warned. “And only if you absolutely need to use them.”

“Are you sure we can’t just blow the whole place up?” Lizzie shouted gleefully.

“Remember Lizzie, this trip is only about gathering intelligence,” Jenny said, glaring.
