Rebuilding Year

Hockey has always been a game for wolves; hard and fierce on the ice, quiet and friendly at home. In my long time with the Pan American League, I have seen a number of werewolves find stardom by playing hockey. It suits their basic make up of strict hierarchy and their interdependence. My team isn’t made up of wolves. We are Bouda. Our other skin is that of a hyena. Our team is the Hampden County Hyena in fact, and we were playing for our division’s championship, better than we had expected, since we were in a rebuilding year.

I’d stopped the puck and I was down on the ice when I felt the kick. Play had been stopped but an idiot still went out of his way to kick me hard enough to feel it through forty pounds of padding. When I started playing, just about a hundred years ago, we didn’t get padding like we do now. I stuffed my socks with newspapers back then.

The big forward had kicked me, trying to take me out of play. Intending to hurt a goalie was outside the etiquette of the game. I looked up at the forward and then over at my team’s captain.

Robby was only captain on the ice because I let him.

Robby skated over to me, “You okay Trey?”

My name is Jean-Mark Boulanger, but everyone called me Trey this time around. I was playing as my own grandson, my third. Living forever had its downsides, pretending to be your own child or grandchild was one of those downsides.

“Fine, just kicked by a gnat,” I said as my eyes went back and forth from Robby to the guy who kicked me. I showed my teeth, the people around us would think I was smiling up at my captain; Robby would know I was trying not to sink my teeth into the opposing player. I couldn’t attack anyone without clearance from rest of the Clan; I couldn’t attack in front of so many normal people.
