Two hours later Daisy felt as if the energy vampire had sucked out her life force. She’d never been more exhausted in her life. Her head hurt, her body ached, and forming coherent sentences and speaking them seemed impossible. As she sat in her SUV, all she wanted to do was go home and crawl into bed.

The session had been grueling. Dr. Braxton had steered them away from the emotionally fraught discussion about the house and had guided them toward other topics, promising they could come back to the house issue when they had more skills. They’d worked out a few logistics about pickups and dropoffs, and they had both agreed that there would be no important issues discussed by text. Anything more significant than a scheduling change would be handled in an in-person phone call or a face-to-face meeting.

Dr. Braxton had also given them homework. They were to have a date before their next session in two weeks. They were also to list ten things they had liked about each other before they got married and ten things they liked about each other now. Daisy would need to calm down a little before coming up with even one.

Jordan’s words had cut her to her heart. He’d known she’d inherited the house when her mother had passed away. It had been held in trust until she turned twenty-five or got married—whichever came first. He’d always said he loved the house as much as she did and couldn’t wait to live there with her. He’d joked about all the extra money they would have to spend on new cars for him, what with no mortgage payment. They’d been happy in the house—at least, she’d been happy. Now she wasn’t sure about anything when it came to him.

She gathered the strength to start her car and head for home. Her home, she thought bitterly. But not Jordan’s. He’d made that plenty clear and while he might regret what he’d said, he couldn’t take it back and she couldn’t ever forget.
