THE NIGHTMARE

Unable to hold on to the nightmare as it winged over the hordes of assembled monsters below, Camila was frightened to her core. The only thing that kept her on this beast was Odessa clutching her tightly.

She watched as the airship in front of them got closer. It was a huge airship but had sleek, angular lines. Its front bow came to a sharp sweeping point, and the ship itself wasn’t very wide. The airbags were long and narrow, and instead of a tall mast and sails to catch the wind, two long poles stuck out at the sides, with swept back sails that looked almost like winged scoops to catch the wind.

This was the Tesserect II, built to replace its massive predecessor that ran on fuel cells. This was built for speed and maneuverability. She noticed, instead of two propellers at the back, this airship had four. Dark smoke shot out the sides, so it had a coal boiler, and it was apparently ready to go.

The nightmare landed on the deck, shrieking as the Eleven airship sailors approached cautiously. Odessa swung down and then helped her off the bird.

She looked around. There was also a company of Elven soldiers on this deck, all wearing elaborate armor and carrying bows and arrows or short swords.

A tall Elf with long brown hair and brown eyes approached. She was wearing a navy-colored long dress and cape, and she was visibly pregnant. She looked at Camila sadly and then glanced at Odessa. “Amon thanks you for your help. He requests an audience with you.”

“I really don’t have time, Gwendairea. I have to get to the rent and meet Bia. We have more monsters to release,” she said, her eyes flashing. “I don’t care what you do with the girl, but Father wants her kept safe.”

“I know. She will not be hurt,” the Elf said. “How will we know when to return her?”

“Fane will let you know. Don’t worry,” Odessa said, handing over the key to the shackles. Then she put her hand on the creature’s neck. He was trying to strike at an Elf who had gotten too close to him. She swung back up on the nightmare’s back, and then she took off again, heading due east.

“Camila, you look hurt. What happened?” Gwendairea said, stepping forward with the key. She quickly unlocked the shackles and then took Camila's hand gently.

“I tried to get away, and I fell,” she said, looking down at the state of her body and clothes.

“Well, before we meet my father, we need to get you healed and cleaned up. Come with me, please,” Gwendairea said, turning and leaning her to stairs that lead down below. Camila was taken to a small guest room. “Undress, there is water to clean with, and a clean Elven robe for you to wear,” she said, pointing. And then she just stood there in front of the door.

With shaking hands, Camila quickly undressed and cleaned up her sore knees with the soap and water, wincing at the sting.
