Abe Holt’s compound was comparable to a fortress. The chain link fence that surrounded the property met at a tall gate that hosted signs warning trespassers they would be shot.

Moreau glanced at Duncan, who shut the Rodeo off and stepped outside the vehicle. “Not part of the local Welcome Wagon, is he?” she asked as she got out and closed her door.

Duncan gave a curt shake of his head as he pulled out his phone and pressed buttons on the screen until he finally put it to his ear.

“Constable Duncan. We need to speak with you on official police business.”

Whatever was said on the other end of the line caused Duncan’s face to darken, and he clicked the phone off without another word.

The wizened face of Abe Holt appeared about ten minutes later. He walked down the hill, flanked by dogs who were calm and content with him, but bristled and snarled when they saw the strangers at the gate. Mutts, but with the look of Pit Bull and Rottweiler in the mix.

“You be pokin’ yer nose in where it don’t belong.”

“We’re investigating the death of Sammy Petersen.”

“Kid tops himself by my property. What’s it to do with me?”

Duncan glared at his uncle. “It’s my job to investigate whatever crimes happen here. Sammy Petersen died on the border of your property, his body filled with illegal drugs. If you think I’m going to back off because you might be involved I’d say the elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top.”

The old man’s lip curled. “I’m sharp as ever, boy. You let me get my hands on you and you’ll find that out sure enough.”

Duncan ignored the threat. “Then you’ll recall letting some local boys pass through your property on Friday night.”

“What I recollect or don’t is no business of yours.”

“This is a police investigation.”

The beady blue eyes seemed to get even smaller. “You can’t get a warrant for my memory.”

“But I can get one for your property. Just think. Two or three dozen officers combing every inch of your acreage. I can’t imagine what they might find.”

Abe walked over to the fence and pointed a finger at Duncan. “Just because you have a badge don’t mean I have to take that shit from you, boy.”

He turned and stomped back up the hill. The dogs snapped at Duncan and Moreau one last time before they followed him.

Duncan’s fists were clenched, his face as red as a vine-ripened tomato.

“It could have been worse,” Moreau said.

His jaw dropped open as he looked at her.

“He could have let the dogs out.”

Duncan smiled as his face faded to its normal color. “Where does this leave us?”

“Any banks or ATMs we might be able to use to verify the timeline for their hike down the hill?”

He shook his head. “I checked everywhere along that path. There’s nothing we can use except eyewitness testimony.”

Moreau considered that. It wasn’t as good as video footage but it was better than nothing. “We’d need a warrant to completely retrace their steps and prove one of them could have fired the gun.
