Chapter Nineteen

The three men felt strangely refreshed and uplifted as they arrived back in the familiar surroundings of the small farm they shared with William and Maud.

Brother Simon rode into the city and was pleasantly surprised to find a note from Jebe waiting for him at the Templar preceptory. He placed it deep inside the folds of his habit and departed in haste to return to the farm. Climbing down hurriedly from his horse he quickly found The Hood and Scarlet who were tending to animals and told them both to drop what they were doing and follow him.

They walked a while into the fields until they were quite alone and Scarlet questioned, "What is the trouble Brother Simon?"

"You look agitated," said The Hood. Nervously looking around him protectively and reaching down to the hilt of his sword in a subconscious movement. Guragchaa was always slightly worried about his surroundings and was often teased about it by his two friends. He could never really impart to them the irrational fear he felt about being alone in a foreign land, one many months travel from the place which he knew as home. His two friends would laugh at his fears and reassure him with the fact this was their home and he had nothing to fear. Reassurance never really came to him.

"When I went to the Temple preceptory today, there was a note." Brother Simon saw the look of excitement mixed with a measure of anticipation on their faces. He reached into the folds of his garments and produced the wax sealed letter.

"Well open it man!" snapped Scarlet impatiently.

The Brother broke the seal and opened out the note and looked at it blankly for a moment before handing it to Guragchaa.

"What did it say?" asked John Scarlet eagerly looking up into the expressionless face of his corpulent friend.

"I have absolutely no idea!"

Guragchaa took the note from his friend, smiled and led them a few feet to a fallen log where he sat down and motioned to Simon to do the same. Both men were now at eye level with their short friend.

"This is from Jebe," he announced softly, he showed the letter to Scarlet who could not understand the words written. "It is written in my tongue, the language of the Besud," he said quietly. A tear welled in his eye, "I have not spoken or read my language in an age, and I sometimes feel sad and sick when I think of how I am so far away from my family." Scarlet and Simon both put one hand onto his shoulders and squeezed them affectionately. They both knew the loneliness and yearning you could feel deep down in the pit of your stomach when you were far away from your home. The memories and smiles of friends and loved ones become even more vivid and can sometimes creep up on you at the most unexpected of times.

"Thank you my good friends," replied the Mongol. Guragchaa wiped his eye with the back of his grubby hand and started to silently read.
