Choose a Sprouting Method

Sprouting equipment has evolved considerably since I set out to sprout twenty-five years ago with a glass jar, cheesecloth, and a rubber band, but the fundamentals haven’t changed. We’re still attempting the same thing that humans have been doing since the beginning of time: to mimic Mother Nature and create an environment that will awaken the plant within. One of the amazing things about sprouting is that you can start with tools that you already have at home; it’s an incredibly easy entry into DIY that anyone can accomplish. And if you’re worried that it won’t work for you, remember that it’s not about you. The seed’s destiny is to sprout, and without human intervention, the plant will replicate and multiply itself through its seeds.

The primary means to sprout today are jars, bags, tubes, baskets/bowls, sprouting trays, and semiautomatic sprouters. I will cover them all here, along with setups for sprouting grasses and sunflower seeds in trays and special setups for gelatinous seeds like chia, arugula, and basil.

Most seeds will sprout with any method, whereas others are pickier. For example, lentils can be sprouted by any method, but tiny broccoli sprouts might get stuck in a hemp or muslin bag (but still will sprout with a little TLC) or fall through the large holes of a colander, and wheatgrass requires a porous tray. See the chart on here to pick the right method for your chosen seeds.
