“Stick it up your nostrils, boil-brain!”

“Arabella, I’m coming!”

Stitch Head leaped out of bed and raced out of the dormitory. Ivo hitched up his skirts and hurried after him.

“Wait for me! Dolly clothing hard to run in!”

“It’s coming from downstairs – this way!” whispered Stitch Head. He ran down stairs and into the hall. He stopped for a moment, tilting his head to hear.

“I’ll kick you into next week!”

“The dining room!” said Stich Head and dashed inside … but the room was empty. “Where is she? Why is she crying out? She must be close, I can hear her! Arabella! Where are you?”

“I’ll twist off your legs, grot-face!”

“How can we hear her if she not here? Is like she is in walls!” said a desperate Ivo.

“In the walls…?” repeated Stitch Head. He made his way urgently around the room, reaching up and tapping one painting after another with his fingers.

“Maybe this not best time to become admirer of art,” suggested Ivo.

“There are secret passages all over Castle Grotteskew – short cuts and hidden chambers. What if…?” Stitch Head trailed off as he came to an imposing landscape of (as it happened) a dark, foreboding castle. He tapped it gently and then slid his tiny fingers round the frame. After a moment there came a click … and the painting slid sideways across the wall.

“Ivo … look,” whispered Stitch Head.

A long, dark passageway stretched out before them, as shadowy as any in Grotteskew and filled with thick, dusty cobwebs.

“What we do?” squeaked a nervous Ivo. “I have bad feeling about this…”

“These cobwebs have been broken,” said Stitch Head, brushing his fingers gently across the webs. “Someone’s been down here recently.”

Ivo sighed. “We are going to go down there, aren’t we?”
