Chapter 24

Zombie Riot

POLICE COMMISSIONER Stanley Kirkpatrick heard the ghoulish chatter of the Tommy gun as he approached the New York Public Library. The siren of his official limousine howled angrily. Behind him, four radio cars whimpered in pursuit.

When he rounded the corner, Kirkpatrick beheld a nearly unbelievable sight—a man he did not recognize mowing down a fresh pack of zombies with a Thompson submachine gun, his stance wide-legged. The machine-gunner wore a leather flying jacket and matching helmet. Goggles surrounded his eyes, masking his tense features.

Not far behind his recoil-jittering form, Richard Wentworth and another man were hunkered down behind a black roadster.

“Circle the library!” he told his driver. “Bryant Park. Step on it.”

Sergeant Carter wrestled the limousine about, followed by the four trailing radio cars.

The limousine pulled up behind the black roadster. Kirkpatrick emerged, demanding, “I received your summons, Dick. Kindly bring me up to date.”

The police official’s face was haggard. Kirkpatrick looked as if he had aged three years, and it was not yet the noon hour.

Wentworth joined him in the back of the limousine. His words were clipped.

“Briefly, I managed to trail that sanitation truck to the Electric Building. It’s parked in the basement garage. As you can see, its foul, penetrating radiations are creating more meteor-maddened zombies. That man with the Thompson gun is a government agent, with Military Intelligence. He is putting them down before the horror that has befallen them has fully played out.”

“Great God!” Kirkpatrick said hoarsely. “This is terrible beyond comprehension. This is horror—madness. It smacks of tribulation straight out of the Book of Revelation.”

“Listen to me,” said Wentworth urgently. “I have good reason to believe Steel Mask and Count Calypsa are both holed up in the higher floors of the Electric Building. It cannot be assaulted. The radiations will turn any man into a Doom Zombie before he could reach their secret headquarters. For the moment, suppressing the growing zombie menace is the best we can do. I suggest that your men train their riot guns on the emerging wretches until there are no more left. We cannot let them get beyond two square blocks.”

“Hand me my microphone, please,” Kirkpatrick said dully.

Clearing his throat, the Commissioner rapped out sharp radio orders. Soon, it was done. Police officers stationed themselves at different points, taking appropriate positions behind parked cars and lampposts for their own safety.

Riot guns came up and began hammering. Zombies, resembling marionettes without visible strings, crumbled and fell. Others were slammed about when whistling buckshot perforated their unprotected flesh. It was a slaughter. Controlled, restrained, but a slaughter nonetheless.

Eventually, G-8’s Tommy gun was exhausted. The pavement at his feet was littered with empty ammunition drums.

Kirkpatrick stepped from his machine and leveled a finger at the G-2 aviator, who was collecting the discarded drums.

“You there! I understand that you belong to the Intelligence Service. Leave the vicinity immediately. This a police matter. We have the sole jurisdiction.”

Wordlessly, the agent from G-2 returned to Operator 5’s side. His goggled face was pale, as was Christopher’s.
