Chapter 25

Steel Skull

Under the spiteful lash of police and F.B.I. lead, Ram Singh sent the Juggernaut hurtling back through the broken police roadblock.

Unable to move his head because of the grip of steel, Wentworth’s eyes searched about until he saw, standing beside his limousine, the tall form of Stanley Kirkpatrick, firing in his direction with his long-barreled revolver.

Deep in his throat, he groaned. Would Kirkpatrick now conclude that The Spider was in league with… what did he say his name was?

“You called yourself Steel Skull,” Wentworth said accusingly. “But you are really Count Carmine Calypsa.”

“I did not expect to be unmasked so easily. My sincere congratulations to you, Spider.”

Behind them, the fast-moving F.B.I. car gathered speed. The Suicide Squad was giving chase.

Seeing this in the rear-vision mirror, the giant who called himself Steel Skull boomed out, “This is an impressive machine. I am certain you can discourage them.”

Wentworth reached for a dashboard button and depressed it. The trunk popped open. There was an explosive hiss, and the roadway in their wake became sprinkled with broad-headed carpet tacks, the majority of which landed on their flat heads, creating a disorganized carpet of sharp points.

The F.B.I. machine plowed into this array of rubber-piercing steel. One tire blew out, and then another. It slowed down, and it swapped ends before coming to an abrupt halt athwart the curb.

The metallic voice of their captor boomed, “Very good! Keep driving.”

“Where are we going?” demanded Wentworth, keenly aware of the rows of crenelated metal teeth looming behind him.

“I? I am going where I will. You gentlemen are bound for the graveyard.” Steel Skull gave their necks an ungentle squeeze.

Grimacing fiercely, Ram Singh held the wheel as if he were about to snap it in his great hands. Punjabi curses streamed out of his bearded face through tight-champed teeth.

Wentworth said, “I do not get your game, Calypsa.”

“It is a complicated one. Do not trouble yourself. Suffice it to say, it is a very deep game. Perhaps it is beyond you.”

“I seem to recall that you were roasted alive after you fell victim to the pernicious rays of the meteorite you attempted to control. I saw with my own eyes the greedy flames envelop you, heard your death wails.”

Steel Skull said nothing. The fantastic forged-skull cranium rotated left and right, as glowing red crystal eyes studied the buildings flicking past. They were on Madison Avenue now, headed south toward Greenwich Village.

“Turn east at this next corner,” he commanded.

Unseen, Richard Wentworth touched Ram Singh’s right side with a single finger, tapping out Morse code.

C-r-a-c-k u-s u-p.

“Han, sahib,” hissed the huge Sikh.

Unbeknownst to the steel monstrosity filling the back seat, Ram Singh was responding to his master, and his master alone.

Accelerating into the turn, the Sikh wrenched the wheel violently and threw the Juggernaut up on two wheels. He aimed for a fireplug, struck it broadside.

The ten-ton machine broke the cast-iron hydrant, and water gushed forth, cascading everywhere. It came in through the open windows of the back, drenching Steel Skull in a deluge of high-pressure water.
