“Shuten-dōji,” I repeated, “the Fiend-Lord. Now that I think about it, Misa-chan’s grandfather mentioned that name before. So, there’s some other demon guy runnin’ around out there that’s real scary and strong like Daji?”

Terri shook her head. “It’s just pure conjecture at this point, but the possibility is there. If he has indeed returned, then Daji may try to ally herself with him, and that’ll make things way worse than they already are.”

“I don’t understand,” Otohime said. “Was he not beheaded and destroyed by Minamoto no Yorimitsu1 and the Four Heavenly Kings?”

“Your Majesty, you know full well that Aelithian beings such as ourselves never truly ‘die.’ As long as the myths, legends, and stories exist, we will inevitably return, even if it’s in a completely different form.”

“Wh-what?” I stammered. “No way. You mean, all the crazy, creepy, freaky monsters I’ve beat up so far will—”

“Yes,” Terri nodded. “It may only be a few days or months, or take years or even centuries, but they will all return someday as long as humans continue to tell their stories. That is exactly why my duties as a member of the Council are so important. The peace and balance of all worlds must be preserved against the forces of darkness and chaos at all costs. It’s a cycle that has continued for millennia.”

I sighed. “Well, aren’t you two just full of good news.”

“Cheer up, kid,” Dead Ted said. “Since we’re goin’ to Kyoto, I’ll finally get to see my family. If you want, I’ll introduce you to Nobuko and Mina.”

“Yeah, that sounds nice. I’m just not looking forward to having to explain to them why Daddy’s now a silk umbrella.”

“Oh…good point, kid. I’m gonna have to face them like this, aren’t I?”

“At any rate,” the princess said, “let us focus on one concern at a time. I entrust my sister’s safety to you.”

“Don’t worry,” I said, “we’ll get her back. I promise. And then we’ll keep lookin’ for more of those Death Stones.”

She bowed. “Thank you so much. I am in your debt. Now then, while I would love nothing more than to send you on your way to find her immediately, I am aware that all of you are weary from your journey and battles, and Lady Amaterasu needs more time to recover from her injury. I shall personally escort you to your chambers. Please, follow me.”

The princess led the way down another hall. I followed just behind, staring at the back of her pulsating hair and shimmering crystal dress. Dead Ted stayed silent in my hand, while the two siblings trailed along and argued in the back. The gardens in this section of the palace contained young maple trees with fresh autumn leaves, filling my field of vision with dazzling shades of red, yellow, orange, and brown. The river under the bridges here were no longer frozen, but flowed in gentle streams. Leaves fell and fluttered about, but for every leaf that came off a branch, a brand new leaf appeared in its place.
