"You wouldn't dare shoot me in front of all of these people," he said while raising the bottle to strike Updike.
Updike shot the bottle out of his hand. It became very quiet in the lobby. "The next one is for anybody who gets in my way." No one attempted to stop him as he walked slowly to the exit.
Chapter 22
The doorman opened the door for him. "Do you need a cab, sir?"
Updike ignored the man as he ran to Diane's car. Several of the valets stared at him but made no effort to detain him. Approaching sirens sounded in the distance. He jumped in and turned the ignition--the engine didn't start. A second attempt to start the car failed. He waited about a minute. The sirens grew closer. Updike looked in his rearview mirror. Several police cruisers rushed into the parking lot. The cops jumped out of their vehicles with weapons in their hands.
Updike turned the key a third time as he pushed the accelerator. The engine responded with a roar. Throwing the car in gear, he raced toward the exit on the other end of the parking lot.
A man jumped out of the way to keep from being run over. Updike looked in the rearview mirror, seeing the cops running behind him. Three more squad cars with their sirens blaring entered the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Updike gave the car more gas--the speedometer jumped an additional 30 miles per hour. He reached the exit--two additional squad cars came to a screeching halt and blocked the opening. Refusing to slow down, he took to the sidewalk, knocking over chairs and tables as bystanders moved frantically out of the way to avoid being run over.
Updike reached the street, steadily picking up speed. He barreled down the street while cutting in and out of traffic. Multiple police cars with their red and blue bubble lights flashing chased after him. Screaming sirens filled the air.
He looked at the speedometer, he was going 75 miles per hour, 35 miles over the speed limit. Not having a clue on the best route to take to avoid getting caught, he continued down the street.
One of the police cars rammed him from the rear, causing him to swerve into the next lane and clip a Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai spun around and careened into a GM Terrain. This started a chain reaction of metal crashing into metal as drivers unsuccessfully sought to avoid being involved in the carnage of wrecked vehicles.
The same policeman had a grin on his face as he rammed into Updike a second time. The impact caused Updike to be thrown forward but the seat belt prevented him from going through the windshield. His back was on fire by this time. He increased his speed but the cop kept close on his tail.
Updike approached an intersection--the light was green, then yellow, then red--all within less than 10seconds. He narrowly missed running into a gasoline tanker truck as he ran through the intersection.
