NO LIGHT, NO LIGHT

Shane’s sitting on the patio of a café with skyscrapers towering around him. And as soon as I see it, I realize I know this intersection.

Georgia and Howe.

The leaves on the trees that line the sidewalks tell me it’s fall, and though Shane thinks about how warm it is, he pulls his sleeves down and fiddles with the cuffs. Turning his attention to the overcast sky, he draws in the sea breeze, telling himself that he can get through this.

Get through what, Shay? I wonder.

He looks through the window of the café and answers my question. Johnathan Roth is inside, slipping a bill into the tip jar as he finishes paying for two coffees.

Shane’s known John for his entire life, he tells me, but their relationship has shifted dramatically over the years. In what seems like a dog’s age ago, he used to call him “Uncle John.” But that was back when the Roth and Thomas families were close. It’s not like that anymore; especially since Da has stopped drinking. Now, during the rare occasions when John acknowledges Shane’s alive, he treats him like a burden that’s always getting in the way between him and his son.

I’m okay with that, he tells me. I’ll always be that burden. For as long as Barrett needs me to be.

He grinds his teeth as he watches John walk across the café. Da warned him to stay out of John’s way. That he’s a loose cannon who drinks too much and has an unprecedented temper. But Shane already knows this because he’s witnessed it many times. Both Travis and Barrett have suffered the wrath of that drunken temper—nearly to their deaths—and Shane can never forgive him for that. The man is reckless with the lives of both of his sons, and he cares more about the future of his company than their wellbeing.

What does he want? Shane thinks.

He grips the arm of the metal chair as his thoughts flash back to the thirty-second call he got at lunchtime, where John had ordered him to meet him here. Then about the look in Barrett’s eye when he’d caught the confusion on Shane’s face and asked, “Who the hell was that?”

Shane had lied to him because that had been John’s order, and Barrett’s following look told him that it hadn’t worked. This didn’t surprise Shane. He’s never been a good liar.

The bell on the door of the café rings, and John exits with the two coffees in hand. Today, he’s in a black, three-piece suit with a maroon tie, and his thousand-dollar sunglasses are propped up on his dark red hair. He puts one disposable cup in front of Shane, and sets the other one across the table, before lowering himself on the other side. Shane tries not to shiver when John smiles. It’s the same one an expert salesman would do before he’s about to pitch some snake oil.

“Thank you for meeting me here, Shane,” John says, trying to be friendly. “You must be very busy with school.
