Chapter 6: Hannah Kilpatrick

Hannah walked up to the bar and tossed her wild red curls over her shoulder as she motioned to the bartender. When she was younger, she hated her red hair and pale skin that was covered in freckles, but through the years she had learned to embrace it and even love it. It made her stick out, and in a family like hers, she had learned finding ways to stick out was important.

Her parents divorced when she was seven and both ended up with significant others who had kids of their own. Yet, they both decided they also wanted kids with their new significant others. This is how Hannah ended up with eight siblings who ranged in age from seven to eighteen. Since people didn’t tend to leave her small hometown in West Virginia, all of their parents lived within five blocks of each other. It was like growing up in some off-the-wall version of The Brady Bunch.

With a plethora of new stepkids and babies, Hannah did everything she could to make sure her parents didn’t forget about their firstborn. She was their wild child, and damn, she was proud of it. Even with how crazy she drove them, Hannah’s parents and stepparents were all wonderful, and she absolutely adored them. She even adored all of the little rascals they had spawned.

Her parents were definitely on to something with the whole big family thing though. After growing up surrounded by parents, grandparents, and siblings, Hannah wanted at least four kids of her own, but that would be way in the future. Hannah needed years of hookups and flings before she would be ready to settle down with anyone.

Speaking of which… Hannah smiled her trademark crooked smile at the girl now standing next to her at the bar.

Well, girl wasn’t the right word. This was a woman. She had to be at least in her late twenties, making her quite a few years older than Hannah. That also made her that much sexier.

Hannah leaned her elbow on the bar and cleared her throat to get the woman’s attention. “Come here often?” she asked when the woman looked at her.

The woman threw her head back in laughter as if Hannah had just made a joke. Once she stopped laughing, she took a big sip of whatever she was drinking. “Such a line. You’re going to have to do better than that.”

Hannah scoffed and put a hand on her chest in mock offense. “I was only saying that I think I would remember seeing such a beautiful face here before.”

The woman rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the smile that parted her lips. “Try again.”

Hannah stared at the woman, trying to think of what to say. She was entranced and didn’t want this to end before it even started. At that moment, one of the lights above the bar caught the woman’s face just right to make her sea-blue eyes glow. It was one of the most gorgeous sights Hannah had ever seen and she lost her breath, which didn’t normally happen.
