Margot,
I had to go out for a little while. Be back soon. Dinner is in the oven. An officer is stationed outside to keep watch. Make yourself at home.
XO,
R.
I smile as I read. He’s a sweetie. Not over the top, but enough to intrigue me. I suspect that Rags Bertram is a man who would take excellent care of me. Not because he had to in some old-fashioned way that would render me a damsel in distress, but because he’d want to. I feel my cheeks pink as I think about it. I blush, considering what it would be like if Rags was my own.
Cap whimpers again, directing my attention to the oven. That stinker. Did he wake me up so I’d give him table scraps? I glance down and ask him as much. He practically nods. I chuckle as I open the oven and pull out a warming tray that looks like something they’d serve on a fancy dinner cruise. The aroma fills me top to bottom as I take it in, lifting the lid to find roast chicken, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and macaroni and cheese. It all appears to be made from scratch. A loaf of bread sits at the back of the tray, boasting pretty x-shaped indentations from the pan it was baked in. I'm ravenously hungry. A glass filled with ice cubes sits on the counter nearby, strategically placed next to a pitcher of tea. I pour some for myself and take a big sip. It’s lightly sweetened and delicious.
Still wearing the quilt, I plop myself down on a dining room chair and dig into the feast Rags has prepared for me. The food feels like love going in, washed down with the best tea I’ve ever tasted. It’s all so decadent and I’m so hungry, I almost forget the dream and whatever Mom is sorry for. I give Cap a few scraps because I’d be a monster not to. He licks his lips, satisfied, and I copy the motion.
When I’m done, I clean my dishes and get dressed. I’d love a shower, but that seems too presumptuous, so I decide to wait. I use a hand towel in the guest bathroom to clean myself up as well as I can. I’m blotting my freshly washed face and running a hand through my hair when my phone rings.
It’s Chevelle. I’ve put her off long enough. We need to talk about Puck. I need my suitcase. I also need to tell her about Rags and Grandpa Vern, and have her help me figure out what to do with Lottie. Most of all, I need my friend if I’m going to get through this.
I pick up the phone, then invite her over.
