Chapter 18

Giddyup

I spent the next thirty seconds of my life reevaluating every decision I’d ever made.

How could I not see what Singer identified at first glance? What keeps me from understanding why I never think of my team as anything other than my family? The University of Georgia piled a stack of useless letters at the end of my name, and all those years of learning to understand the human mind left me blind and ignorant of my own condition. Is my yearning for a family stronger than my ability to cope with the loss? What else am I embracing that’s meant to fill the chasm left in my heart when my family was torn from my life? Am I wrong in treating those around me as family? Does that window on the world put the people I love in peril? Does it weaken me as a leader, as a friend, as a brother?

Teresa Lynn laid a hand on my arm and drew me back from my cosmic introspection. “Chase, are you okay?”

“I’m good. Sorry. I was just thinking.”

She laughed. “I’d say. You were a million miles away. Is everything all right?”

“It is. I was planning to come find you, so I’m glad you’re here. Listen, I’m committed to finding the person or people killing your colleagues, and the next step in doing that is finding Pamela Bingham.”

She leaned against the rail. “Thank you again for all of that.”

“Save the thanks until we’re successful. For now, we have to focus on getting to Tierra del Fuego. I dispatched a team back to Georgia to pack gear and retrieve the jet. They’ll be back in Cancun, most likely tonight, but no later than tomorrow morning. The ship, even though she’s one of the fastest ships on Earth, isn’t fast enough to get us there when we need to be there. We’ll catch the jet in Cancun, and the ship will rendezvous with us in a week or so.”

She said, “If we’re still in South America in a week.”

“Exactly. Regardless of where we are, if there’s water, the ship will be there. If I’m going to start a fight—or finish one—I like having the fastest battleship on the planet in my back pocket.”

She said, “If I had that option during my career, I would’ve done the same.”

“I do have a few questions about Ms. Bingham.”

Teresa said, “Shoot.”

“First, do you know where she’ll be once we get to Tierra del Fuego, or is this another hunting expedition?”

“I know where she should be. Of course, she doesn’t own the property. That would be ludicrous, and she’d be too easy to track down. There’s a cabin at the end of a long inlet. The only ways in are through the mountain pass or across the water. Both are easy to monitor.”

I said, “That makes it sound like she’s security-minded, but that didn’t seem to be the case on the island.”

“She was. You just didn’t see it.”

I scowled. “I don’t think we would’ve missed cameras or sensors.
