CHAPTER 15

Joy headed down the corridor where Anubis had told her Dixon was working. The damn man was going to drive her crazy. He glanced up when she came in but went straight back to work. “Pouting?” She asked and crossed her arms.

Dixon didn’t look up. “I’m soldering, you shouldn’t be here.”

“Then fucking stop and talk to me because I’m not leaving.” She was going to set boundaries right here and right now.

He set the device he was holding down and turned to look at her. “So, now you want to talk?”

“No. I never want to fucking talk, but it’s obvious you need to.” She didn’t blink as she held his stare.

“You’re risking your life and the life of our baby.”

“And if I don’t go out there, we’re pretty much going in blind tomorrow morning. How many are going to die then? You? Me? Frank? Drake? I know I can do this. What is more important is you know I can do this. Where is this macho bullshit coming from?”

“You’re pregnant!” Dixon yelled at her.

“The baby is maybe the size of a fucking pea! Doc gave me anti-nausea meds and I’m fine. I will get that antenna up and do what I need to do up there. I refuse to change who and what I am because I’m pregnant, Dixon. You better digest that quickly, or we are going to have problems.”

“Then I guess we have problems. That is my baby, too and I don’t want you or her hurt.”

She narrowed her eyes. “If I wasn’t pregnant this wouldn’t be an issue.”

“Yes, it would!” Dixon threw his hands up in the air. “Don’t you get it? It kills me when you leave on a mission! I go fucking insane every single time. I hate that you’re still taking assignments.”

Joy digested that bit of information. “We’ve talked about this.”

“No, there was no discussion. You told me you were continuing to work. You’ve never asked how I feel about it.”

“Because it is my decision.” She lowered her voice. “I’m married to you, that doesn’t give you the right to change me or make decisions for me.”

“And after the baby is born? Are you going to accept missions?”

“I don’t know,” she answered honestly. “I just found out I’m pregnant. I thought I had the flu. I haven’t even thought about what I’ll do tomorrow after we retake this land, so I can’t answer you. But one thing I will tell you: I love you and I love my baby. I will not take unnecessary risks. I don’t do that, and I haven’t done that since we hooked up.” She was damn careful ever since that mission where her target had almost killed her. Dixon had seen the bruises from that disaster. There hadn’t been a close call since and there wouldn’t be. She actually valued her life and wanted to have a family with the frustrating hunk of sex seething at her from across the room.

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”

“Yes.” She lifted her hands.
