CHAPTER 13

1710hrs. Lycos’ Mountain:

Lycos put down the phone and looked up through the skylight in his office. He’d been back on the mountain for two weeks after going back to civilization to talk with a candidate for the baby class. He was a solid no-go. On paper, the candidate seemed to fit what was needed for a Shadow Operative, but paper couldn’t judge character. That was Lycos’ job. The young man he’d spoken with was beyond salvation or hope. There had been others that had failed to measure up, and each time that happened, Lycos added another layer to the screening process.

“Hey, Dad, we’re back. Lady and I had a great run,” Ethan’s deep voice called up the incline. Lycos could hear the laughter in his son’s voice. He rolled his eyes and hit the switch deploying the satellite dish.

Lycos called down the incline, “Ethan, you can’t keep her, she’s Dog’s mate, not a pet.” The female wolf was sweet, inquisitive, and not aggressive to her mate’s strange pack, but if he gave in an inch, Ethan and Bethanie would have a pink collar on the animal and Bethanie would probably paint the damn thing’s claws pink. He was saving the poor animal mental anguish. “Come up here, please.”

He turned and powered up the bank of computers. “What’s up?” Ethan came into the office and stood next to him. At nineteen, his son was now two inches taller than he was. They lived a hard life, and the muscles the boy had developed were impressive.

“Guardian was attacked. We need to get any film we can of the attack.”

Ethan blinked and then shook his head. “We’d need a warrant.”

“We have orders that supersede a warrant. We’re cleared.” He sat down in his chair and Ethan dropped into his.

“Is the satellite dish deployed?” Ethan started typing, his fingers flying across the keyboard.

“It is. It will take a moment to acquire.” Given the position of the satellites they’d tapped into, they’d have good coverage for the next six hours. “I haven’t checked the breadbox today. Are we fully charged?”

Ethan glanced over at the digital display. “We are.” The single panel they used for electricity now actually made too much electricity, and the space where they had used massive photovoltaic cells was now used by batteries that could light up a decent-sized town.

“I’m going to have to back door this and break into those systems.” Ethan looked over at him. “I’ve never tried to do that. In theory, I know how to look for ways in, but…”

“You do whatever it takes, leave as little evidence of us being there as possible. I’ll back you up, just tell me what you need me to do.” Lycos logged in, and a mirror image of the screen Ethan had called up flashed up on his monitor.

“Wait, we want camera footage of the attack first, right? The systems will take time to hack. Let’s do this the easy way.” The boy called up a social media site and searched for ‘Washington D.
