Radio Frequency Identification Technology

Over the last several years the SCM community has been paying a great deal of attention to radio frequency identification technology (RFID). But the questions still remain: Can RFID be implemented in a cost-effective manner? What problems will an RFID tag solve that an inexpensive barcode label cannot? Is RFID killing an ant with a sledgehammer?

In 1999, the Auto ID Center was developed at MIT as a non-profit collaboration between research academia and the private sector to develop a global product-tracking infrastructure using RFID technology. This infrastructure used the standardized electronic product code (EPC) numbering scheme. The EPC contained a global trade item number (GTIN), which kept barcode-level information as well as a serial number that could identify each individual item.
