Chapter Twelve
Inferior Genes
Cold fury simmered in Vincent's eyes. âYou mean to tell me that you, a half-demon, were defeated by a ten-year-old child?â
Reign gave a lopsided grin. âNot defeated, sire, but yes, our plans have been altered.â
Vincent slowly approached Reign with barely concealed anger. âAltered? So that batch of precious, not to mention expensive, virus was burnt to the ground, for nothing?â
Another sly smile crossed Reign's lips. âWellâ¦â
âSTOP GRINNING! The only reason I keep you around at all is your experiments and the things you produce for me. If you can't even deliver the viruses you make, what in the name of Hell is the point of you at all?â
Reign did his best to hide a smirk, but the corners of his lips still rose. âAllow me to explain, Master. Jade did exactly what was asked of her. When I left the facility, I encountered the Nitaya boy and his brother. Following your orders, I made sure that Soren contracted the illness. I was ready then to continue my journey to unleash the rest of the virus at the town of Fallway. However, before I could continue on my wayâ¦shall we say, 'reinforcements' arrived.â
Vincent shook his head in annoyance. âReinforcements?â
âOh yes. We were joined by Callista, Raven, Deacon and Kyra.â
Vincent's eyes widened, but he said nothing. Tilting his head to one side, Reign laughed at the shocked expression on Vincent's face.
âCallista? Raven?â Vincent spluttered. âAre you sure it was them?â
âOf course. I do know our enemies.â
âBut how did you escape them?â Vincent asked and began pacing backwards and forwards.
Another high-pitched chuckle. âFor a start, I'm a Rhygun, remember?â
Vincent raised his eyebrows with scepticism. âRhygun or not, Callista and Raven could have finished you off.â
âThey did 'finish me off,' but they didn't reckon with a Rhygun's ability to heal, did they? I managed to infect another of the group before they 'killed' me.â
Vincent stopped in his tracks. âWhich?â
âDeacon Thialdor.â Reign took great pleasure in the words.
Vincent closed his eyes and tilted his head towards the ceiling, soaking in the realisation that Reign could have altered history forever. The difference this could make was monumental. It was truly the twist of fate Vincent had been waiting for.
âSo, let me get this straight. Not only will the Nitaya boy get sick, but one of the most senior fighters in the Children of Light is going to fall victim to the Guardian-Ceresecca disease? This is perfect.â
Reign clicked his tongue. âIt's a shame I couldn't get to Raven or Callista, but Deacon was the closest. Anyway, I decided to take the next part of the plan into my own hands.â
âWhat did you do?â
âI told them there was an antidote in Meraxor, at the laboratory.â Reign held both hands up to stop Vincent, who was about to interrupt him with a burst of vitriolic insults. âI know that's a lie, but it does mean is that a whole group of your most high-profile targets is currently just walking onto your land to find an antidote that doesn't even exist.
