Part Two:

Becoming the Hero

A Fresh Start

May 15th

“I JUST WISH IT WASN’T so hard.” I leaned over the edge of the building, staring down at the busy sidewalks below. “Letting go of your past. Breaking free of its grasp.”

Cole plopped down on the ledge beside me. “As much as we may want to run from our pasts, I don’t think it’s entirely possible. Your past is still very much a part of you, it’s just a matter of how you go about changing it going forward.”

“Teach me your ways, Old Wise One.” Arabella sat on Cole’s lap and smiled.

“Ignore this one,” Cole teased. “She’s a pain in the ass.”

At that, she shrugged. “It’s kind of my specialty, what can I say?”

Over the past couple of weeks, I’d found myself paying closer attention to my surroundings, knowing that Quin would make good on her promise soon enough. Yet at the same time, I’d also felt more relaxed. It was an odd feeling. I’d actually come to feel as though I’d finally belonged somewhere; almost as though I’d finally figured out my own identity.

I was split between two worlds, wanting to be the hero, but knowing I could become the monster at the drop of a hat if need be. As I thought back to my initial meeting with Arabella, I pressed my fingers to my chest. “Can I ask you something?” I hopped up onto the ledge and turned to face her.

Arabella stood and threw her arm over my shoulder. “Are you going to ask me out, Ellie? Because I hate to inform you, I’m not so sure my girlfriend would appreciate that.”

I nudged her in her side. “You wish,” I joked. “I actually wanted to ask you these.”

I held her hand up to my chest, pressing her figures to the slight bump in my skin.

I watched as she closed her eyes for a brief moment and shook her head. “I think Dawson is the person you need to speak to about that, love.”

“Is he around by any chance?”

“Of course, the guy practically lives at headquarters these days,” she answered. “He’s excited about the prospects of putting together an all-female super hero team. Speaking of which, I believe he threw together a costume for you. It’s not as awesome as mine, I’d reckon, but you should probably go check it out.”

“Bells, you’re such an ass.” Cole pulled her closer to him and let out a playful laugh. “Like I said, ignore this one, Ellie. She doesn’t know when to shut up.”

“Dawson should be in the lab,” Arabella said, ignoring Cole’s comments.

“Thanks.” As I made my way to the stairway, I felt a smile tug at the corners of my mouth. For once, I felt at peace.

This was who I was supposed to be.

This was who I was – Ellie, the hero.

I would take back the identity they’d assigned me.

I would do what I could to wash my hands of the blood I’d spilled throughout the years.

For once, I belonged to the world I’d spent my life hiding from.
