Belladonna and I briefly held a rather heated discussion over my “abandonment” of the people of Tilden. Personally, I doubted that Amelia would return any time soon, now that her cover had been blown. It simply was not worth it for a vampire to face down a skilled necromancer over the acquisition of a few human lives. Once I convinced her that the previous evening’s events were sufficient to upset the stranglehold Amelia and Cray Lee had over the county, she relented.

In the end, we agreed to return to Tilden to tie up loose ends after a quick trip back to Austin to regroup. The hardest part was not persuading her that the situation here could wait a day or two. Instead, it was assuring her that her beloved Harley would be fine parked behind the condominium with a look away, go away spell on it.

I had every intention of following up with the master vampire and her bodyguard—and Sheriff Ulrich. Presently, however, my primary focus was on finding and destroying Creighton, preferably slowly and painfully. I’d had time to process the emotions that my discoveries had dredged up, and found I was experiencing something I’d not felt in quite some time—grief.

When I was a child, I’d funneled my grief into a cold, hard rage that fueled my survival over many difficult years in Underhill. Today, my reaction was no different. I spent considerable time on the ride back to Austin sharpening my anger into a formidable weapon.

We’d been listening to a Tejano radio station for miles. All the songs were in Spanish, and the accompaniment consisted of a lot of accordions and keyboards, which surprisingly was not as unpleasant as one might think. Now that we were closer to San Antonio, she located a classic rock station on the dial, and my ears were treated to a horrendous modern interpretation of a classical musical arrangement.

“I preferred the Spanish music, I think,” I said as I readjusted my position in my seat. “You do realize I have an extensive selection of compact discs in the glovebox?”

“They’re all operas and arias. Blech. And who uses CDs anymore?”

“Actually, an aria is a vocal solo sung as part of an operatic performance. As for the CDs, I grew accustomed to using them when I drove an older vehicle.”

“Whatever. And you’re changing the subject.”

“Regarding?”

“You’ve been brooding since we left Tilden. It’d help if you talked about what you’re feeling, a lot more than you think.”

“Hmm. It’s difficult enough for me to experience these feelings. Putting them into words seems an impossible task.”

Thankfully, that comment caused Belladonna to turn the radio down. “Try. Talking about your feelings takes practice, and you’re never going to develop the skill if you don’t start.”

“I really don’t see the point,” I admitted.

My companion sighed, and I couldn’t help but steal a glimpse as she did so. Over the last several days, I’d put forth a
